Thinking through and writing about issues that rouse

Story Expo Day 3: Balance

9/7/2014

Today was a much more balanced day. It actually balanced out the weekend, because all 3 workshops were devoid of the "business" of writing, and more about writing techniques. Also, it was only a half day, so I had time to play and relax a little.
  • I felt I was in my element in my 8:00 a.m. session on Themes. One of the presenters was Linda Seger, who has focused her life work on theology and drama, or the different ways that drama communicates value systems without being preachy. The other presenter, Pamela Jaye Smith specializes in mythic themes in stories, film and otherwise. She is like a story goddess to me, so full of knowledge. (I had 3 workshops with her altogether). I won the raffle of her newest book, Show Me the Love: All Kinds of Love for All Kinds of Stories.
  • One of my favorite writing books is The Writer's Journey, by Christopher Vogler. He was the presenter in my second workshop today. Wow! Obviously, I know his work very well, and it was pretty cool to take this class from a favorite author.
  • Last workshop was Make Your Memoir Mythic. I am not  planning to write a memoir, but I am trying to help a friend write one, so this was very helpful, and given by Patricia, who I am now a fan of.

Summary of Story Expo. I am glad I came. It made me really think about my projects and what I want to do with them. But I know I am not in the world of striving to "make it" in this business as so many of the other participants were. I do want to write and I do want an audience, but I am going to investigate other venues to get my work out there other  than the "business," as was generally presented here. I don't want to write for the masses, and I do believe that it is possible to reach and be appreciated by niche audiences. I'm going to explore that.
